Archana Kumar began her love affair with Indian classical dance nearly two decades ago. She trained in Bharatanatyam and after 7 years, embraced Kathak, which she has practiced since 1996. She has been trained under the well-known gurus of Kathak Smt. Maya Rao, Smt.Chitra Venugopal, and Munnalal Shukla. She has attended several workshops under Pandit Chitresh Das, Pandit Birju Maharaj, and Smt. Kumudhini Lakhia.
Since 2000 she has been exploring techniques of modern dance and improvisation. She has collaborated and worked with several well-known modern dancers and choreographers of Seattle. In 2004, Archana formed the Manasarovar Kathak School teaching primarily children and adults of all ages and backgrounds. Her classes are held at the Redmond/Sammamish ISKCON Temple, Ballet Bellevue in downtown Bellevue and most recently in Seattle. She regularly conducts lecture demonstrations and classes on Kathak in schools and community colleges. She also teaches beginning modern dance and conducts fun creative dance workshops for children.
Archana has performed both locally and internationally at these venues: Tokyo, Shanghai, Bangalore, Delhi, Vancouver, Kelowna, U.A.E., Bend, Oregon and at Vashon Island. In June 2007 she formed her new dance company ‘Arch Ensemble’ producing their first show, MEHFIL on June 2, 2007.
