Kuntal Roy
Kuntal Roy is one of the most promising and acclaimed tabla players from Kolkata. Despite being from a non-musical family and growing up in rural Bengal, he was initiated into tabla at an early age by Sri. Narayan Chandra Haldar, a local tabla teacher from his village. He continued his study under Sri. Radha Raman Nath, a senior disciple of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. In the quest of furthering his knowledge, Kuntal became a disciple of the legendary tabla player and teacher Pandit Shankar Ghosh.
Melody, clarity and precision are some of the characteristics of Kuntal’s playing. Although early in his pursuit of professional performances, Kuntal has already given a number of solo performances and has accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists both in India and abroad. He has participated in percussion ensembles composed and directed by Sri. Bikram Ghosh. He received high accolades for his performances from appreciative audiences during his recent tours of USA and Russia. He has also appeared on National Television in India.
In Utsav 2007, Kuntal Roy will be providing tabla accompaniment for Sandeep Ranade, Brandon McIntosh and Archana Kumar in their respective performances. Venue: Conference Room Theater, Center House, Seattle Center. Dates: Saturday October 13 and Sunday October 14.
He will also perform in Tala Vadya Kacheri led by Ravi Balasubramanian. Venue: MOHAI McEachern Auditorium. Date: Sunday Oct 14. Time: 6:30 PM
